attempt#2

My second attempt to blog, and this time I am hoping to do better than 3 posts a year

Building 3, Microsoft
To cut a long story short, I ended up with an opportunity to do an intern at MS-IDC in Hyderabad. There is a general prejudice among my peers that s/w testing is not as interesting as s/w development, (most likely because of the guy who introduced us(comp scis) to that field). Although I am not sure about the same, I was happy I got a dev role and thus work started.
Initially, it was pretty interesting, learning new things, etc. But then, the initial euphoria induced by the new atmosphere, free soft drinks/coffee, pool, tt etc died down, and I realized that I hadn’t written a single line of code in 3-4 weeks.
But then, somehow, I managed to get some things working and made progress, just before my mid-term review which is up in another 30 min….(enough abt work)…
Hyderabad is a nice place and thankfully I found some company in IIIT(NV n Venky) and we go about roaming in the city during weekends, which has resulted in a lot of funny incidents, one of which will be my next post…..

BaCk HoMe…
August 16, 2008
at last… Independence day ( for India no doubt, but more important, for me – no mess for 3 days)… and i’m back home for a couple of days after a hectic week at college.
There were club inductions taking place, companies coming to college to recruit interns and the works… I was glad that classes were cancelled since the comapny was to make a presentation, but rather unfortunately, we were forced to attend tht presentation. I took a few tests, made it to round 2 in one n all that…it was a good experience and i realised tht its gonna be difficult in the beg of final yr with placements n al tht…
But as usual, after all tht analysis, we were back playing DotA in the hostel and having fun as usual…guess that isn’t gonna change for some time to come…. sadly, it must, since tests are around the corner and we’ve got some nice teachers this time, which means we’ve to do some solid work to make sense of the questions
…. ( Hope all tht goes well)…
The first DotA tourney of the year is going on, and we’re hoping to finish up in a nice spot….
Code jam came n went, and now its time to suit up for the ACM regionals which is in another two months….with two good coders on my team, i’ve to do some serious coding so that i’m not left out

Google Code Jam Qualification round
July 16, 2008
Finally, it is time for the qualification round!!
It was only recently that i found out what the event actually was -
“Google Code Jam is a coding competition in which professional and student programmers are asked to solve complex algorithmic challenges in a limited amount of time. The contest is all-inclusive: Google Code Jam lets you program in the coding language and development environment of your choice.” – (Scary!!)
Well…I had actually heard of this before, but until some time ago, I was always of the opinion that it makes sense to take part only in contests that you stand a chance of winning. Then I happened to join TopCoder…it was there I realized that it would be almost impossible for a person like me to actually “win” anything. However I gave it a shot and found out how much fun one could have by just competing, and so I decided to give a try to GCJ…
visit Google Code Jam for more info, Qualification starts
4:30 AM (IST) on July 17th
All the best
